Auke Bay Elementary School

Greetings to our Sun/Temp project classes...

from Auke Bay Elementary School in Juneau, Alaska. (Auke rhymes with talk.) We are a 4th grade class of 29 kids, 14 girls and 15 boys, with just over 400 kids in our school. We have 6 Macintosh computers in our classroom, and we do the usual stuff during the day, science, math, reading, handwriting and Alaska Studies. We write a lot of stories and poems, too.

Juneau, the capital of Alaska, is in Southeast Alaska, the part next to Canada at 58 degrees 23 minutes north latitude, and 134 degrees 38 minutes west longitude. It has a population of about 30,000 people. This is a popular tourist spot and many cruise ships come in the summer. Tourists see the Mendenhall Glacier and our beautiful scenery. Sometimes we see bear and we see a lot of bald eagles. Fishing and hiking are also very popular activities.

One unique thing about Juneau is that there are no roads to the rest of the world. We have to fly or take a ferry when we leave Juneau. The ferry route is called the Inside Passage. You can take your car on the ferry and there are staterooms and a dining room. They are pretty big boats.

In our spare time we go to the mall, but our two malls are very small compared to most of yours, play with friends, watch TV, read and do our homework. Many of us play sports like soccer, basketball, swimming, jump roping. We have a downhill ski area, Eaglecrest.

The weather now is rainy, windy, and slushy. It has snowed a little but not much. Our temperature is in the 30's and 40's. Juneau has a warm and wet climate. Right now it is getting light about 8 o'clock and dark about 4 o'clock.

We are excited about being part of this project and we are locating you on our world map.
