Water Consumption

          I have learned a lot of cool things about water in the Down the Drain program.  I learned that an average person uses about 80-100 gallons a day!  Did you know that when you flush a standard flow toilet it can use up to eight gallons per flush?  I never knew any of that before I started Down the Drain.  Next I will talk about the experiment we did.

          The experiment we did in class was really fun.  We each got a sheet of paper that has a list of things that you do daily that includes water in it.  The list also has about how many gallons it is for each thing on the list.  Then you take it home and every time you do something on the list you make a tally mark next to the thing you did.  You do this for a whole week.  Then when the week is over you add up all the gallons on the list and you find out about how much water you use a week.  Next I will talk about my hypothesis and my prediction

          My hypothesis was that people who live by the desert use more water than people who live by the ocean.  My hypothesis was correct and wrong because some places by the ocean use more water than places in the desert and visa versa. My prediction was that schools in Arizona use more water than schools in New York.  I figured out that my prediction was wrong.  Since New York has more people their water consumption was more than Arizona schools which have less people.  That is why New York classes use more water than Arizona classes.

          There are lots of interesting facts that I learned in Down the Drain.  I learned that every time you water the lawn you are using about 300 gallons of water!  I also learned that you could get about 271 daily baths from one rainstorm!  I learned if you live on a hill water gets to your house by pressure pumps!  Those are interesting facts about water.  Next I will tell you about how much water our class uses.

          Our classes average in water usage is 133 gallons per day.  One of New York’s classes was 323 gallons per day.  So I think our class was low on water usage.  I use about1097.75 gallons a week.  My team average was 132 gallons per day.  Those are the averages for the class and my team.
