Procedure:
Create working groups of 6 students.  Break each group of six into pairs.

After each pair of students has collected their respective data and answered their questions, have the students regroup into their group of six. Have the students compare their data and answer the questions on the worksheets.

  • PAIR 1
    1. Part 1
      1. Access the American Lung Association's State of the Air report's America's 25 Most Ozone-Polluted Counties.  For the state with the most counties on the list, write the counties, the total populations, and the grade in the table on your Student Worksheet - Pair 1.

      2. Answer the questions under Part 1 on the Student Worksheet - Pair 1.
         
    2. Part 2
      1. Obtain a California State Map (back-up) and color the "Most Ozone-Polluted Counties" in California with the color brown.
      2. Answer the questions under Part 2 on the Student Worksheet - Pair 1.

    1. Part 1
      1. Access the American Lung Association's California State Data.
      2. Write the county names on the list that received an "A" for a grade in the table on the Student Worksheet - Pair 2 (.pdf)

      1. Obtain a California State Map (back-up) and color the "A" Counties in California with the color green.
      2. Answer the questions under Part 2 on the Student Worksheet - Pair 2.

    1. Part 1
      1. Collect the county information for your state by accessing the American Lung Association's State Air Pollution Summaries Map.
      2. Click on your state.
      3. List the counties and their High Ozone Days grades in the table on the Student Worksheet - Pair 3:
        • NOTE: Click on the county name for the Total Population.
        • The following is an example for the state of Massachusetts:

    2. Part 2
      1. Obtain a map of your state from the U.S. Census Bureau web site.
      2. Write the County Grade under the name of each county on the map.
      3. Color code the counties according to the following scale:
        Grade A - Green (good)
        Grade B - Yellow (moderate)
        Grade C - Orange (unhealthy for sensitive groups)
        Grade D - Red (unhealthy)
        Grade F - Purple / Maroon (very unhealthy)
         
      4. Answer the questions under Part 2 on the Student Worksheet - Pair 3.
