TM 4.8 Tossing Coins
Launch Probability Explorer:
- Click “Let’s Go,” choose coins, and then choose 2.
- At upper left, put in 100. You can do this by moving the little
toggle. If you click on the toggle repeatedly, you can get up to (or
down to) 100.
- What is your prediction as to what will happen when we toss two
coins 100 times? List your prediction below.
- 2 Heads: ______________________
- 2 Tails: _______________________
- 1 Head, 1 Tail: __________________
- Now click on “Run Experiment” (the little guy on the left of the
task bar).
- After the machine finishes, click on “Show Data Table” (2d from
the right).
- Record below what actually happened.
- 2 Heads: _____________________
- 2 Tails: ______________________
- 1 Head, 1 Tail: _________________
- Now, let’s think about what SHOULD happen. On one toss of a coin
what are the chances of getting
a. 1 Head? _____________________
b. 1 Tail? _____________________
- On two tosses, what do you think the chances are to get:
- 2 Heads in a row: _______________________
- 2 Tails in a row: ________________________
- 1 Tail and 1 Head: ______________________
Extra:
- Suppose you have three sweaters and four pair of slacks. How many
outfits do you have? Let’s talk about that. If I have three sweaters
AND Four pair of slacks, for each sweater I have how many outfits? So,
for three sweaters I have ___________________ outfits.
- Now, let’s do the whole thing over again, but this time with
three coins. Answer the same questions. Instead of 100 tosses, make it
96 (I want it to be divisible by 8) Can you tell us why?
