Exploring Internet Resources for Mathematical Problem Solving
Software: Internet tools & Applets
October 12th, 2005

The purpose of today's workshop is to help you better understand how the Internet can help in teaching and learning mathematics through problem solving.

Part 1 - Overview of the TIME workshop series

Part 2 - Examples of Internet based problem explorations

1 Road Sign & Bus Problem

What's the problem with Word problems? At the heart of the problem is a very simple, yet powerful idea: making sense.

2 Birthday Problem

How many people do you need in a room for there to be a better than 50% chance that at least 2 people will share the same birthday?
3 Are you the average traveler today?

Today we are going to find out who traveled the average distance to get to this workshop. First we'll start off with a guess. What do you think is the average distance that the members of this group traveled today?

4 The Pizza Server

The electronic version. Find out what the server is charging for its pizza. Come up with a price function that will help you to figure out the cost in advance.

5 Traffic Jam
Software: Java Applet

Figure out how to stay out a jam and solve the puzzle in the minimum number of moves.  Then come up with a rule that will predict outcomes for any number of frogs wanting to go across.

.
6 Great Green Globs Contest
Software:  Green Globs and Graphing Equations

What is the highest score you can get for this array of Globs? You will need to sharpen your slope and y-intercept detection skills.
